46 per cent of Germans oppose taking in Afghans

A survey commissioned by the German press agency reveals that 46 per cent of Germany's population is strongly against admitting Afghan immigrants to the country. Even some of those in favour of taking in Afghans would tie admission to strict conditions.

46 per cent of Germans in a representative survey by the YouGov polling institute were opposed to Germany receiving many Afghan refugees.

Even many of those in favour of admission (47 %) would link it to conditions, saying that Germany should only allow Afghan refugees into the country if other EU member states follow suit. Far fewer people believe that refugees should be taken in even if other EU countries do not do so, RND reports.

European Union interior ministers have so far failed to reach a clear common position on the issue of migrants from Afghanistan, but they have shared the opinion that “encouraging illegal migration should be avoided.” However, German Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) opposed the idea of giving concrete figures on the resettlement of Afghan refugees in EU countries.

Those still in Afghanistan have to face difficulties if they want to leave the country, as the Taliban control rural roads and border crossings, observers say. To make matters worse, neighbouring countries, such as Iran, have restricted entry into their territory.
