Another violent weekend sees police attacked with petrol bombs and fireworks - videos

The weekend saw a number of similar anti-police attacks in several places. The raging mob has set cars ablaze and attacked officers arriving at the scene, while hurling insults at them. One police union has called for the deployment of additional officers to one of the departments where public security has drastically declined.

France witnessed another violent weekend with officers on duty suffering a number of attacks within a short few hours in the town of Grigny, Essonne department, near the capital. According to information obtained by Actu17.fr, a crowd of some twenty people – all wearing hoodies and covering their faces – charged at the officers who were alerted to a domestic dispute. They hurled stones and fireworks at the officers who used tear gas in return. Two hours later police were called to the same scene, because the attackers have built barricades in the middle of the road and set them on fire. This time, police were pelted with petrol bombs.

Police union Alliance pointed out that the incident serves as further evidence that more officers are needed in Essonne, as violent anti-police attacks have seen a drastic rise of late. According to the union, the region needs an additional 200 policemen. In Corbeil-Essonnes, officers detaining a criminal were attacked by several individuals last weekend. Five of the assailants were taken in custody and one of the officers was injured. On Thursday evening, two rival gangs clashed in Evry. A 24-year-old man was shot and killed, and police detained five gang members, but police made no arrests after the latest atrocity. There was a serious attack on police in Etampes, also in Essone department. A small crowd of around fifty men attacked the officers who tried to take custody of a stolen motorcycle, Actu17.fr reports. A man trying to sell his vehicle was attacked by gang members,w ho stole his motorbike. The arriving policemen were attacked by dozens of black-clad youngsters, who hurled stones and shouted expletives towards the officers.

Evntually, police managed to retrieve the stolen motorbike and made two arrests. A policeman was hit in the head by a stone and suffered minor injuries, and one police vehicle was visibly damaged. Authorities have launched an investigation into the incident.
