As crisis hits university students in France and elsewhere, more undergrads claim food packages

As many students are no longer able to finance their own meals, there are growing lines at campuses for the discounted food packages. One student even posted a photo on Facebook, requesting answers to his questions from the minister in charge.

Belgian university students are in trouble. Much like their French peers, they have an increasingly hard time paying for their meals. Many have lost their jobs enabling them to make at least some money, so even covering the costs of three meals a day can be difficult for many of them.

An association for student solidarity has set up stores on some campuses, where financially worse-off students can buy enough food for a week at affordable prices, for as little as 4 euros. The stores are replenished with donations offered by individuals and supermarkets. According to information from  bx1, students can currently buy low-cost foods in five locations in Belgium s capital.

Circumstances for Belgian university students are difficult, and not just in the capital. A student posted a photo on Facebook, showing a lot of people standing in line in one of the corridors at Liege University. He writes: „Students queuing for food. Welcome to Belgium in 2021…”

The distribution of food packages has yet to begin, but 200 people have already lined up in waiting, the student said. He also asked when politicians would finally care to listen to them, addressing his questions directly to Valerie Glatigny, Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research, Youth and Sports.
