On Tuesday night, the Hungarian government announced that because of the Brussels sanctions policy it could no longer maintain the price caps on fuel that was imposed more than a year ago.

According to the data on cargopedia.net of 5 December 2022, the per litre price of petrol at 1.498 euros and diesel at 1.653 euros was the 7th and 8th lowest respectively compared to the EU member states, making fuel less expensive in Hungary than in nearly 20 countries, the economy portal Vilaggazdasag writes.

Petrol costs the most in Greece, followed by Finland, whereas the price of diesel is the highest in Sweden, with Finland the runner-up here as well.

As for the other extreme, Malta boasts the lowest fuel prices within the EU.

In Central Europe, prices are very similar to those in Hungary, with a litre of petrol costing roughly the same in Croatia, Slovakia, and the Czech Republic. Of the V4 countries, motorists can find the lowest prices at the pump in Poland. Looking at the price of diesel, it is slightly lower in Hungary than in Croatia, while the situation is reversed in the case of Polish and Czech prices, the economic paper points out.
