Last year anonymous donors pumped a 715 million dollars into a massive dark money network in the US to bankroll left-wing and liberal efforts across the country. Several of the organisations using this money also enjoy the support of the George Soros’s Open Society Foundations (OSF).

In American politics, „dark money” refers to the political expenditures of non-governmental organisations. Last year, organisations dealing with such money were able to rake in $ 714.7 million through various donors, according to The Washington Free Beacon.

The cash went to funds managed by Arabella Advisors. Once the donors send the cash to the funds, it is then transferred to dozens of progressive, left-wing initiatives that fall under their auspices, as well as to outside groups.

The Arabella network consists of four funds:

• Sixteen Thirty Fund,
• New Venture Fund,
• Windward Fund,
• Hopewell Fund.

Each Arabella-managed fund provides its tax and legal status to the groups that sit beneath them. Under this setup, known as fiscal sponsorship, the sponsored groups are not standalone nonprofits and do not have to file tax forms to the IRS, effectively obscuring information such as financials, board members, and other important details.

Scott Nielsen, the managing director of advocacy at Arabella, has worked with the Open Society Foundations and the Democracy Alliance, a wealthy donor club co-founded by Soros that helped launch well-known groups such as Media Matters.

Two of the four funds mentioned above also receive support from George Soros.

In 2018 alone, the Sixteen Thirty Fund received more than $ 4.2 million from the Open Society Foundations. In addition, Douglas Hattaway, a former board member of the organisation, has also worked with the Soros Foundation.

And the New Venture Fund enriched more than $ 4.5 million in 2018 thanks to OSF.

Of the four funds, most money went to the New Venture Fund last year, the largest fund within the Araballa network. According to financial documents, they were able to raise $450 million, with the largest donation being $83 million. The Sixteen Thirty Fund raked in $137.2 million, with someone paying $33 million in one instalment.

The Hopewell Fund pulled in $84.2 million, including a single $36 million donation. The Windward Fund took in $43.3 million. Its largest donation was $8.5 million.

The funds disbursed a total of $648 million last year. Nearly $400 million went to outside groups that include America Votes, Center for American Progress, Center for Popular Democracy, Latino Victory Project, and Color of Change.

What these organisations have in common is that they are all on the OSF register.

• America Votes received $1 million from OFS in 2018.
• Center for American Progress received $580,000 in 2018.
• Center for Popular Democracy pocketed $2.1 million from OSF in 2018.
• Latino Victory Project was granted $670,000 from Soros in 2018.
• Color of Change received $350,000 in 2018.
