EP resolution "harmful and deceptive"

"EP representatives should feel ashamed," MEP of Poland s governing party Beata Szydlo said in the European Parliament. She recalled that the EP adopted a "harmful and deceptive" resolution against Poland on 17 September - the day marking the country s Soviet occupation - calling on the Commission to hold Poland accountable during the Article 7 procedures.

According to a resolution adopted recently by the European Parliament, the rule of law continues to deteriorate in Poland, so the EP has called on the both Council and the Commission to engage in a broad interpretation of the possibilities offered by the Article 7 procedure and make full use of them. The EP accuses Poland of refusing to accept European values and continuing to undermine Europe s legal order, despite the four infringement proceedings already underway against the country. „What the Polish government has forgotten is that democracy is not about majority rule, but about respecting EU law,” Spanish Socialist lawmaker Juan Fernando López Aguilar said.

Law and Justice (PiS) MEP Beata Kempa sees the situation differently. In her view, the adopted document is another example of liberal left-wing attacks that seek to undermine the sovereignty of countries. She stressed that the Polish government had the right to carry out reforms and found it outrageous that the EU was constantly mounting obstacles and applying double standards in terms of Poland. She pointed out that the document was born out of the opposition s hatred, who are desperately trying to regain their power. Election stats also show that every member of Poland s opposition Civic Platform party voted against their own country.

Former prime minister and current PiS MEP Beata Szydlo described the outcome of the vote as shameful. She pointed out that the EP s „deceptive” statement came on 17 September, the 81st anniversary of the Soviet occupation.

„17 September is a symbolic and tragic day in the life of Poland. Yet the EP chose this day to adopt its hostile and deceptive resolution against Poland,” she said, adding that the text of the document was „imbued with lies” and difficult to comment on. „It is a shame on every MEP who voted in favour of it” she said.
