Gdansk protests rainbow aggression

Many were opposed to Saturday s protest dubbed “Gdansk Against Rainbow Aggression” and their counter-demonstration, initiated by members of the LGBT community, has spiralled into obscenity and the desecration of religious symbols.

The rainbow community s cultural attack appears to have intensified in Poland. Today s LGBT community feels its members can do almost anything with impunity, constantly attacking those who disagree and defacing our important symbols like the national flag and other religious icons. We must resist, the organisers of Saturday s Gdansk demonstration wrote in their appeal.

In a bid to prevent the rally, several organisations have called on Mayor Aleksandra Dulkiewicz not to allow the demonstration to go ahead, arguing that such protests exclude and stigmatise certain groups.

Authorities, however, gave the green light and, in response, several LGBT organisations announced a counter-demonstration dubbed „Gdansk – Yes to Equality.”

Although the two demonstrations began peacefully, many LGBT activists protesting against social exclusion behaved provocatively. One protester brought along a „God Loves the LGBT Community” banner, featuring the Polish Catholics iconic symbol, the Black Madonna of Czestochowa.

Another woman marched under a banner depicting a huge vagina, adorned with traditional ribbons customary in Catholic processions.

This kind of provocation, which the organisers also mentioned in their appeal, has triggered cosiderable outcry. Many began filming and taking photos of the woman, who responded with expletives. A member of the ruling Law and Justice Party s (PiS) youth organisation took to social media to highlight the incident.

„F *** YOU – reads a post by the counter-demonstration s leader addressing a Gdansk activist who was taking photographs of her. „Is this the equality, freedom, and democracy you are fighting for?” the young man wrote in his response to the incident.
