An organisation that appears on US stock market speculator George Soros’s payroll has launched an attack against Archbishop Joseph Naumann in an open letter, and also through a petition. Naumann s "sin" was to have lectured US President Joe Biden on abortion and Christianity.

In an open letter, advocacy groups Faith in Public Life (FPL) and Faithful America have called for the removal of Kansas City Archbishop Joseph Naumann, because Mr Naumann – as chairman of the US bishops pro-life committee – had once said US President Joe Biden „should stop calling himself a devout Catholic.” The two afore-mentioned groups have launched a petition for Naumann s removal,  which has been signed by nearly 20,000 people. As a means to promote their signature drive, they chose a picture of Joe Biden shaking hands with Pope Francis.

Joseph Naumann made the disputed remarks back in February, in an interview with Catholic World Report.

„The president should stop defining himself as a devout Catholic, and acknowledge that his view on abortion is contrary to Catholic moral teaching. It would be a more honest approach from him to say he disagreed with his Church on this important issue and that he was acting contrary to Church teaching,” the archbishop said.

The website of the Open Society Foundations reveals that Faith in Public Life received some hefty funds from George Soros. Figures show that OSF granted FPL nearly 200 thousand dollars in 2019 alone. 

It is not unprecedented for FPL to attack personalities of the Catholic church. Last year, for instance, FPL launched a campaign against Cardinal Timothy Dolan and other archbishops, attacking them in a letter on the internet for participating in a telephone conference with US President Donald Trump. In the letter, they claimed that there was nothing pro-life about Donald Trump s agenda.

Faithful America has also blasted religious leaders for speaking out for Donald Trump. In January this year, they initiated a petition against Reverend Franklin Graham for his pro-Trump views.

Joe Biden also has a good relationship with the organisation Planned Parenthood, an abortion clinic, which also enjoys the financial support of George Soros. Last year, PP made it clear that it supported the Democratic presidential candidate against Trump.

In 2019, Pope Francis stated that rejecting abortion was not a religious but a human issue, stressing that abortion was always unacceptable, even if the child to be born had severe disabilities or little chance of staying alive.
