“The guards are in place,” Greece s Minister for Citizens Protection Michalis Chrysochoidis said, in connection with the new government measures introduced to handle the migration pressure. The border remains secure because Frontex is also present and the government s plan and strategy are also working, he added. All relevant authorities are closely monitoring migration processes and tackling new developments on a daily basis, he assured, adding that 400 police officers who had been patrolling the Greece-Turkey border even before the coronavirus outbreak recently returned to reinforce the frontier s protection.

In an interview, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis stressed that the border barrier will be constructed further away from the demarcation line on the Greek side, as a clear sign that Greece is protecting its own territory.

“The fence will be built in defence of our country s interest,”  Chrysochoidis stressed after the pathway of the 26-kilometre fence near Evros has been identified, adding that authorities will move to erect the barrier swiftly. The recruitment of border guards will be accelerated and all crossing points will be closely controlled, the minister said, adding that in case of a new invasion by migrants, “Evros will be closed”.
