Jourova s "fake news" comment is fake news

Out of ignorance or purposely, Vera Jourova has recently described one statement in the Hungarian government s new National Consultation questionnaire as fake news. However, the vice president s claims are false and a Hungarian organisation has provided a detailed rebuttal. Ms Jourova s statement comes as no surprise, given that she is a staunch advocate of the open society concept.

Ms Jourova s recent „fake news” statement is nothing but fake news, because the European Commission has already launched proceedings over the Hungarian Fundamental Law s asylum regulations, the Hungarian Center for Fundamental Rights (HCFR) wrote on social media. HCFR s comments come on the heels of the EC Vice-President s recent remarks during a press briefing about Hungary s National Consultation, where Ms Jurova described one of the questionnaire s statements („They want to force us to amend the Fundamental Law s articles that prevent migration”) as fake news.

Since 2010, the Hungarian government has regularly launched national consultations to ask for Hungarians opinion on key issues affecting their lives. The questionnaires are sent by regular mail but citizens can also fill them out online. The latest National Consultation questionnaire has been made available in English. Its first questions relate to measures against the coronavirus epidemic, asking people how to maintain the epidemiological preparedness and how Hungary can prepare even more effectively.

Zoltan Kovacs, Hungary s state secretary for international communication and relations, said that Hungarians will also be asked to reveal why they think Brussels and the ECDC (the EU s Centre for Disease Prevention and Control) had delayed their emergency response. Hungarians also need to be asked about a number of economic measures, the state secretary added, in particular about potential hostile takeover intentions or plans, including a scheme by George Soros, to indebt EU member states for a very long time, for generations, in the form of perpetual bonds. And the questionnaire will also feature questions on migration and border protection, Mr Kovacs said.

One question concerning migration says: „Brussels is preparing an offensive against the immigration-related regulations of the Hungarian constitution. They want to force us to amend the Fundamental Law s articles that prevent migration.” However, according to European Commission Vice-President Vera Jourova, the claim that „They want to force us to amend the Fundamental Law s articles that prevent migration” is fake news.

„In fact, Ms Jourova s fake news statement is itself fake news,” the Center for Fundamental Rights says in an entry, and then provides details and facts to support their argument.

The principle of the „first safe country” has been incorporated in Hungary s Fundamental Law since 2018. The constitution says: „A non-Hungarian national shall not be entitled to asylum if he or she arrived in the territory of Hungary through any country where he or she was not persecuted or directly threatened with persecution.” Therefore, migrants arriving in Hungary from Serbia are not entitled to  asylum status.

EU institutions have been opposed to this rule ever since and an infringement procedure against Hungary, initiated by the Commission shortly after the amendment had entered into force, is currently before the Court of Justice of the European Union. „The Center for Fundamental Rights has gathered the relevant arguments of the Commission to challenge the immigration rules of the Constitution,”  they wrote, attaching links to their post to the website of the European Commission and the Court of Justice of the European Union.

„Vera Jourova is not telling the truth when she says that the European Commission is not attacking the Hungarian constitution. The relevant section of Hungary s Fundamental Law is indeed subject to an EU procedure initiated because of Hungary s strict anti-immigration rules, which indeed disregards multiculturalism and the principles of an open society,” they add.

Hungary s state secretary for international communication responded to Vera Jourova s statement on Twitter, saying:

Ms Jourova does indeed have a good relationship with George Soros, who is working on building an open society and is also committed to funding migration. The EC s Vice-President has met George Soros on several occasions, and even shared a photo on social media with the captions: „Open society values are at the heart of EU action.”

In another recent case Ms Jourova has repeatedly demonstrated that she in fact sides with the US businessman.

MEP Jerome Riviere wrote a letter to the European Commission back in February, asking the body to respond to the developments affecting the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR), which he described as „another serious stain on an already questionable institution.”

French weekly Valeurs Actuelles was the first newpaper to report on how the billionaire s confidantes had infiltrated the ECHR. Gregor Puppinck, a French constitutional lawyer and head of the European Center for Law and Justice, described this process of permeation in a 200-page report. The report suggests that the Strasbourg Court now boasts several judges who have been helped into power by Soros. The study also contends that the ECHR is being gradually moulded and transformed to reflect the open society ideology.

Although EC Vice-President Vera Jourova replied, saying „The Commission has no doubts about the integrity and independence of the European Court of Human Rights”, she did not respond to the facts listed in the report, which contradict her statement.

Jerome Riviere was outraged by the reply. He said the Commission did not take him seriously as an MEP and ignored his right to hold the EC to account. „I raised an issue but [Jourova] trampled on it,” he said. „The reason is simple: she knows about Soros s influence, but she welcomes it,” Riviere added, noting that Jourova herself has close ties to Soros.
