Embarrassing footage of an MP candidate from the French leftist coalition (Nupes) has come to light. The video shows Green Party politician Leon Thebault snorting white powder from his palm at a party and then wiping his nose. Thebault is a local representative candidate in the 1st electoral district of Aveyron departement, in the south of France.

The recording was posted on Twitter by Damine Rieu, a member of Eric Zemmour’s right-wing Reconquete party, ironically asking whether it is really the above-mentioned politician who can be seen in the few-seconds-long clip.

Meanwhile, the green party candidate, only 21 years of age, also responded to the video. Talking to local paper Centre Presse Aveyron, he admitted that it is him in the recording and gave an embarrassing flimsy explanation to the circumstance. He said that the footage was recorded years ago when he was a first year student in secondary school. He pointed out that contrary to allegations, he was not snorting drugs but powdered Doliprane, a medicine containing paracetamol. He said that the footage had been recorded at a party with friends, adding that this is the kind of foolishness a person does as a teenager.

The young politician’s campaign could suffer a significant setback due to the disclosure of the footage, as pointed out by the newspaper BFMTV reporting on the case. However, Leon Thabault did not interrupt his campaign a few days before Sunday’s parliamentary elections. At 8 pm on 7 June, he held a public forum in the commune of Salles-la-Source in Aveyron department, where participants were welcomed with alcoholic beverages.

The video recording also went viral on social media, with many not believing the young politician’s explanations. This is the true face of the leftist alliance, Arnaud Le Page, politician of the les Republicains Party, wrote on Twitter, adding that France deserves better than that. Le Page stressed that drug addicts had no place in parliament and provided the number of a free-of-charge helpline.

Leon Thebault is especially active on social media platforms. In late May, he proudly posted photos on Facebook taken of the Pride parade held in the town of Rodez, but has not yet responded to any negative comments on this platform.
