Macron and his premier's popularity in free fall

The French president has asked the prime minister to form a new government, but they are unwilling to co-operate with either the left- or the right-wing parties, the press reports. Emmanuel Macron and Elisabeth Borne's popularity is in steady decline, and the majority of the population is dissatisfied with the two politicians.

There is growing pressure on French Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne. The head of state has voted her confidence and asked her to form a government by early July. After failing to gain an absolute majority in parliament, Emmanuel Macron is forced to find allies to implement the planned reforms. He met with party leaders last week, but CNews writes that he does not believe that the leftist France Unbowed (La France Insoumise) or the right-wing National Rally (Rassemblement National) party are pro-republican formations, so he does not want to co-operate with them. The president stated that most political powers will have representation in the new French government, expected to be sworn in in early July, but CNews calls attention to the fact that the head of state does not want to collaborate with the two political parties which have a total of 161 representatives in parliament.

Although Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne submitted her resignation a few days ago, Mr Macron did not accept it, so the premier embarked on the work of putting together a government. At the request of the President, in order to build the new path, Elisabeth Borne will consult the parliamentary groups to explore the possibilities and willingness to cooperate, the PM wrote on Twitter. The path followed by President Macron is clear and in line with what the French people are asking of him, including dialogue, respect and listening to the people, the post concludes.

The French prime minister, appointed in May, is preparing to form a government, but a recent poll shows that neither she nor Emmanuel Macron have ever been as unpopular as they are now. An article in Le Journal du Dimanche, citing a survey by the polling firm Ifop, says

Macron’s popularity is at an all-time low, with only 38 per cent of the population satisfied with his political performance.

President Macron’s popularity has fallen by three per cent since the last poll and is half of what it was at the beginning of the French president’s first five-year term in the summer of 2017, the article reads.

In the case of Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne, the public’s disapproval is even more striking, with only 37 per cent of respondents saying they were satisfied with the premier’s performance,

which is 8 per cent lower than the last survey result.

However, this is not the end of French people’s rejection of Ms Borne, as the Ifop survey also shows that 59 per cent of the population do not approve of the PM’s political activity, compared to 5 per cent who are satisfied with her.
