PM Orban consults Salvini and Morawiecki on forming new European political group

In a video conference on Wednesday, Hungarian PM and Fidesz President Viktor Orban discussed the formation of a new European political group with Italian Lega party chief Matteo Salvini, and Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki, the vice-president of the Law and Justice (PiS) party, Mr Orban's press chief told Hungary's state news agency (MTI).

During the discussion, the politicians described as a success the declaration on the future of Europe, the protection of nation states and traditional values issued by 16 parties in July. The declaration itself has generated considerable interest across the bloc, with many political organisations and parties signaling their intention to join the initiative in recent months.

During Wednesday’s online conference the party leaders also agreed that the Identity and Democracy (ID) and the European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) groups, the European party families of the Lega and PiS parties, will continue talks on the actual forms of future cooperation as early as this week.
