Pro-lifers to end DIY at-home abortions

The government allowed for at-home abortions last year as a temporary option because of the pandemic, but now they are mulling the possibility of extending the measure permanently. Several pro-life organisations argue that the practice, which involves no medical supervision at home, is generally dangerous for women.

The option of taking abortion-inducing medications at-home until the tenth week of pregnancy was introduced last year by the UK government as an emergency measure during the coronavirus pandemic. However, many, including pro-life organisations, disagree with the practice, arguing that they are worried that women may be coerced into having a home abortion and that the drugs could end up in the wrong hands.

One staunch critic of the measure is the Pregnancy Crisis Helpline, whose CEO says the situation of women who want an abortion has not been adequately assessed. Regan King pointed out that since the introduction of the measure, there has been an increase in the number of women calling their helpline in „considerable distress,” shocked by the reality of going through an abortion at home.

Andrea Williams, leader of Christian Concern called attention to the fact that although the government had promised that home abortions would be a temporary, rather than a permanent option, now it is mulling the possibility of making the option permanent.

Care for Women, a partnership of several pro-life groups, was established in a bid to seek „to compassionately expose and detail the true impact these pills are having on women s health.” According to them, over 70 thousand women in England and Wales have undergone a DIY at-home abortion since its introduction in March 2020.

And it is not just pro-life organisations that are worried. A recent survey found that a large proportion of British GPs have expressed concern about women going through abortion at home.
