Sexual violence rises dramatically in Europe

Almost 300 cases of gang rape have been registered by the police in Berlin since 2020, with more than half of the acts having been committed by foreigners.

Two rapes a day

The latest police figures published by the Berlin Senate show that since 2020, around 300 cases of gang or group rape have been registered in Germany’s capital. The data shows that more than half of these were committed by people of foreign origin.

98 gang rapes were registered in 2020, 106 in 2021 and 89 in 2022, but the actual numbers are most probably much higher, as not all cases come to light. Perpetrators often threaten the victims and their family members that they will be killed if they call the police.

Marc Vallendar, the MP of the right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party urges the government to introduce a stricter immigration policy.

„The continuing rise in sexual offences is a frightening and serious problem. We demand tough punishment and swift deportation for sex offenders,”

the right-wing politician said in a newspaper interview. There are no official records in Germany regarding the racial or ethnic background of the suspects, so the exact country of origin of the perpetrators remains unknown. Another statistic, however, sheds light on the nationality of the offenders. It suggests that an average of two women a day become victims of gang rape in the country, and that a large number of perpetrators come from Afghanistan, Iraq and Syria. Commenting on the alarming statistics in 2021, criminologist Christian Pfeiffer said that the same pattern can be discovered among the perpetrators.

„They come from a culture where men clearly play a dominant role in society. In Germany, they assume an outsider role. They realise that they cannot get along with girls easily and their constant failures frustrate them,”

the expert said at the time. In Berlin, foreign-born residents and second- or even third-generation migrants are particularly problematic.

Huge problem also in other European countries

Other countries in Europe are grappling with exactly the same problem. In Italy, for example, 42 per cent of rape suspects are foreign nationals. V4NA has reported on several cases of male immigrants raping women in cold blood. The Italian town of Piacenza was the scene of such a sexual assault most recently. A 27-year-old migrant from New Guinea raped a 55-year-old woman in the street in broad daylight. Data released earlier by Italy’s National Institute for Statistics (ISTAT) show that young, male migrants committed 89.7 per cent of crimes involving exploitation of prostitution and 55.8 per cent of cases involving sexual violence.

Public security has deteriorated to a similar degree in Sweden in recent years. In 2018, the SVT news service revealed that 58 per cent of the men convicted of rape or attempted rape in Sweden in the previous five years were immigrants born outside the European Union, mostly coming from North Africa, South Africa, Afghanistan and the Middle East. In Sweden’s cases where the victim did not know the attacker, the proportion of foreign-born convicted offenders was more than 80 per cent, the BBC reported.
