Hungary’s prime minister posted a video on social media following a government meeting on Wednesday. In it, he recalled that the government had recently maximized petrol prices, curbing its rise; introduced an interest rate freeze on mortgage loans and – as part of the government’s policy to cut utility fees – Hungarians have been receiving energy at a capped price for a while now.

Meanwhile, PM Orban continued, as the prices of other important products are rising, including food, the government has decided to intervene and impose price curbs on six staple food products, namely granulated sugar, wheat flour, sunflower-seed oil, pork leg, chicken breast and cow’s milk with a 2.8% fat content.

As of 1 February, the government will freeze the prices of these six staple food products at their 15 October 2021 levels, PM Orban said, adding that this must happen in every store.

„Hungary keeps moving forward, not backwards,” Mr Orban said in conclusion.
