At a campaign event of the Hungarian Jobbik party, the driver and the bodyguard of party chief Peter Jakab attacked a passer-by walking his dog. The man was pushed to the ground using a choke hold. The Hungarian newspaper Ripost has obtained the video taken of the incident by passers-by.

The violent act was reported to police and the records state that the perpetrator is Mr Jakab’s bodyguard and driver, the newspaper says, adding that police are running inquiries to determine the circumstances of the incident.

The use of choke hold is rather shocking, as its risks have been discussed extensively over the past eighteen months, ever since police applied the hold on George Floyd. Moreover,

the choke hold has been banned in France

and police are no longer allowed to use it. The ban was introduced after police officers, using a choke hold, arrested Cedric Chouviat, a courier, in Paris in January 2020. The courier’s microphone recorded the scene, including clearly audible repeated complaints of not being able to breathe. He was transported to hospital in critical condition, where he died two days later.

According to Ripost, the security guards using the choke hold are part of Peter Jakab’s regular entourage. Usually they try to keep a low profile during the campaign trail, watching Jobbik’s first man from a distance.

Recently, the president of Jobbik has also displayed aggressive behaviour toward a worker and potential voter. Several video recordings of the incident clearly show the vehement animosity with which Peter Jakab is yelling at the man merely trying to do his job.

The video shows that Jobbik’s president threatening the worker using obscene language. However, the encounter did not result in physical assault.

Jobbik and its ally, Magyar Garda, were already involved in countless scandals, and the party’s anti-Semitic and racist manifestations were so severe that they even the international press took notice.

The Telegraph labelled one of Jobbik’s events an anti-Semitic march.

The BBC reported on one of Jobbik’s anti-Roma actions, while The Independent drew attention to Jobbik’s protest against Budapest hosting the World Jewish Congress.
