Elderly Woman Allegedly Raped, Care Centre Failed to Report to Police
A man working in home care in Malmö is suspected of raping an elderly woman, estimated to be around 80 years old, in her own home. The city of Malmö is facing sharp criticism regarding its handling of the case, as the police report was delayed by more than two weeks.
The alleged crime reportedly took place in early February in a downtown Malmö apartment. According to reports from Sydsvenskan and other sources, the victim was assaulted by a male caregiver.
The police and the prosecutor’s office are currently investigating the incident. Prosecutor Veronika Edvinsson stated that the preliminary investigation has only just begun—weeks later—and that the woman has been interviewed, as reported by the Swedish news portal Samnytt. The alleged perpetrator, who is no longer employed as a caregiver, has not yet been arrested.
The case has drawn particular attention due to the actions of the city of Malmö. From February 23, when the authorities were first made aware of the incident, it took until March 13 for a police report to be filed. Meanwhile, the municipality conducted its own internal confidential investigation. The prosecutor has raised concerns about this approach, suggesting it may have hindered the legal process.
According to the prosecutor, there is a risk that the investigation could be negatively impacted if the suspect received information and responded to it before the police interview took place. The municipality explained that they wanted to encourage the 80-year-old victim to file the police report herself. However, this reasoning has been criticized, as official reports are necessary for crime victims to receive appropriate support, such as victim assistance.
Similar Cases on the Rise
This incident is not isolated. In recent years, two high-profile cases have also occurred in Malmö. In November 2023, a home caregiver was sentenced to prison for raping a woman with disabilities. In January 2024, another worker was convicted for sexually harassing a 94-year-old woman. Earlier this year, Samnytt reported that two Syrian men working in home care in Kristinehamn were charged after humiliating an 81-year-old client.
Reports from various parts of the country indicate that this phenomenon is widespread. The incidents raise recurring criticisms and questions about employment checks, work practices, and the protection of particularly vulnerable elderly individuals.
The incident has political ramifications. Lisbeth P. Ekström, the leader of the Sweden Democrats’ faction on Malmö’s health, care, and welfare committee, has sharply criticized the municipality’s actions and is calling for changes. Ekström asserts that the municipality’s scandalous measures leave lifelong scars on Malmö’s residents in cases of such horrific crimes. The party believes that any suspicion of a crime involving home care staff should be reported to the police immediately. They also emphasize the importance of supporting victims throughout the process.
„We, the Sweden Democrats, believe that the city of Malmö should never obstruct the functioning of the justice system. This is a serious situation, and action must be taken. If the city administration becomes aware of a crime suspected to involve employees in Malmö’s home care, they must report the case to the police without delay,” says Lisbeth P. Ekström.
In a committee initiative, the Sweden Democrats propose implementing procedures to ensure that suspected crimes are always reported without delay and to strengthen efforts to support victims.
The police investigation is ongoing, with further interviews expected. The focus now is on how municipalities handle suspicions of serious crimes within the care sector—and what procedures are necessary to protect the most vulnerable.
