More young people than ever before identify as belonging to the LGBTQ community.

In the United States, it has become more popular than ever to identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or something other than heterosexual. In 2023, the proportion stood at 7.6 per cent, and it has now risen to 9.3 per cent. A survey carried out last year by Gallup involved random telephone interviews with 14,000 adults across all 50 states. Around 900 of them identified as LGBTQ. That data was then weighted to ensure that the sample accurately reflects the demographics of the national population, which is how

Gallup estimated that 9.3 per cent of American adults identify as LGBTQ.

Jeff Jones, senior editor at Gallup, told NBC News that he didn’t expect that increase to happen so fast. „I didn’t think we would get to 10 per cent as quickly. We’re not quite there yet, but it seems like maybe it’s only a few years away, where before I thought it could have been a couple decades or so, ” he said.

The increase in LGBTQ identification over the last year, Jones said, is due to more of Generation Z, who are 19 to 28, reaching adulthood. Nearly one-quarter, 23.1 per cent, of Gen Z identify as LGBTQ, according to the Gallup report, compared with 14.2 per cent of millennials, who are 29 to 44; 5.1 per cent of Generation X, who are 45 to 60; 3 per cent of baby boomers, who are 61 to 79; and 1.8 per cent of those 80 and older.

„The more Gen Z people who become adults, the higher that number is going to go,”

Jones said.

LGBTQ identification has nearly tripled over the 12 years that Gallup has tracked it. In 2012, it stood at 3.5 per cent.

One key factor, Jones noted, is the rising number of young people identifying as bisexual. The proportion identifying as transgender remains low at 1.3 per cent overall, though among Gen Z the figure is higher, at 4.1 per cent.

Gender Ideology Spreads in Schools

In recent years, particularly under the Biden administration, gender ideology has spread from nursery schools all the way to high schools in the United States. Many parents, students, and even teachers have been outraged by what they describe as extreme decisions.

One case that sparked widespread anger was the discovery of the book Gender Queer: A Memoir in a Virginia school library. The images featured in the award-winning book and published in the media include depictions of child pornography and sexual intercourse content, in addition to sensitisation.

It later emerged that the book was available in school libraries across the country. Another parent expressed alarm that their fourth-grade child had been assigned a compulsory reading about a transgender boy.

In the book titled When Aidan Became a Brother, Aidan, the protagonist, was thought by everyone to be a girl. His parents gave him a pretty name, his room looked like a girl’s room, and he wore clothes that other girls liked wearing. After he realised that he was a trans boy, Aidan and his parents fixed the parts of his life that didn’t fit anymore, and he settled happily into his new life.

Such cases are far from isolated. Under Biden, school curricula across the country have been made to include elements such as gender theory, transgender identity, and social justice norms. Often, parents were not informed about what was being taught or were not allowed to excuse their children from lessons covering these topics.

There was also huge outrage when it emerged that teachers and school counsellors had deliberately withheld information from parents about their child identifying as transgender. In several cases, school staff had even been given explicit instructions to do so.

Trump Cracks Down on Gender Ideology

President Donald Trump, immediately after taking office, made clear that he would move against the gender ideology promoted by his predecessor, and the US federal government would recognise only two sexes.

Trump signed an executive order banning the teaching of gender ideology in schools and requiring institutions to inform parents if questions arose about a pupil’s gender identity. Another directive prohibited schools from secretly assisting students in gender transitions.

The president also began dismantling diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) programmes and offices. Under his order, the Department of Education has already started removing and archiving hundreds of DEI-related guidelines, reports, and training materials, while programme leaders have been placed on paid leave.
