Will Muhammad Conquer Europe?
Today, "Muhammad" is one of the most common male names for newborns in many places, while some Islamist preachers fantasize about conquering Europe through demographic change.
Western Islamist preachers are not extolling integration, participation, or a shared Europe; rather, they are focused on seizing power. The emphasis is not on literacy, equality, or respect for an inclusive society, but rather on a vision of Islamic dominance over a civilization deemed weak. They repeatedly highlight two factors: migration and birth rates, as reported by the Austrian news portal Exxpress.

In Vienna, the name Muhammad is becoming increasingly prevalent. One of the most vocal proponents of the Islamist conquest fantasy is the US-based Salafist preacher, Usman ibn Faruq, who reaches millions through social media. In a widely shared video from 2025, he states:
„Every nightmare you have about a Muslim Europe is coming true. Islam will reach every home.” He dismisses criticism with a defiant indifference: „They can be as angry as they want. I don’t care.”
Islamic scholar in California, Uthman Farooq:
“Your nightmare of an Islamic Europe will come true. You can be as mad as you want, there’s nothing you can do.

Haitham al-Haddad, a scholar working in Great Britain, expresses a similar viewpoint, asserting, „Islam will reach every corner of the world.”
American imam Karim Abu Zaid connects these statements to apocalyptic religious visions, claiming that Europe will be conquered, America will vanish, and even Rome—symbolic of Christianity—will fall. Islamist leader Raed Salah, residing in Jerusalem, paints a picture of a weary West: Europe is nearing its end, gradually succumbing to control through missionary work („Da’wa”).
The demographic dimension is best illustrated by the words of preacher Muhammad Ayed in his Al-Aqsa speech: „Europe is old. It has lost its fertility. We are having children—we will conquer their lands. Their time is up. We are the human force.” The message is clear: demographic data is viewed here as a matter of power.
Muhammad is Already in First Place
Demographic change is already visible—“Muhammad” now dominates cities across Europe. This is indeed true, but only partially, according to Exxpress. In several major cities, a variant of the name Muhammad ranks first: in London, Oslo, and Rotterdam, and it was also the most commonly used name in Berlin around 2024.
In many other cities, the picture is more nuanced:
– Brussels (region): 2nd place
– The Hague: 3rd place
– Amsterdam: 3rd place
– Paris: 8th place
Thus, the name is widespread but not dominant across all areas. Many reports overlook that „Muhammad” is not a single name; it appears in various forms: Mohammed, Mohammad, Muhammad, Mohamed, Muhammed. Counting them individually creates a distorted picture. Consolidating these variants significantly alters the rankings. For instance, in Amsterdam, they do not individually rank first—but together, they likely do.
Vienna: The Reality Behind the Number
In 2024, 9,834 boys were born in Vienna. The most popular name is surprisingly low: Adam accounts for only 125 births—just 1.3%. As can be seen, no single name dominates—the diversity is already immense.
The ten most common names, exactly as they appear, are: Adam (125), Elias (110), Noah (100), Leon (98), Miksa (87), Theodor (84), Felix, Paul, Leo, David. None of the ten most common names are variants of Muhammad. However, phonetic counting paints a different picture. Vienna employs a second counting method that groups similar-sounding variants.
In 2022, „Mohammad” ranked sixth with 114 boys (1.2%). Current estimates for 2024 are in a similar range: around 110-115 cases. This would place the name near the top—but not in first place. Even in 2019, a completely different picture emerged locally: in Favoriten, Rudolfsheim-Fünfhaus, and Brigittenau, „Muhammed” held the top spot.
As can be seen, the name is dominant in certain areas but not citywide. The reason lies in the various spellings and the vast diversity of names.
