Efforts to ban Israel from Eurovision Song Contest
Swedish artists have penned an open letter to the European Broadcasters' Union, vehemently demanding a ban on Israeli artists from performing. The letter was also signed by Greta Thunberg's mother, who has been vocal in her anti-Israel rhetoric since the conflict erupted.
More than a thousand Swedish artists, including many popular names in the country, are advocating for Israel’s exclusion from the upcoming Eurovision Song Contest set to take place this spring in Malmo, Sweden..
„Israel’s brutal warfare in the Gaza Strip has destroyed vital civilian infrastructure, created inhumane living conditions and forced 85 percent of the population to flee,”
– the petitioning artists write, foaming at the mouth. According to their open letter, allowing Israel to participate would call the credibility of the European Broadcasters’ Union, the organizer of the annual song contest, into question. Notably, among the signatories is Greta Thunberg’s mother, Malena Ernman, who has been a vocal supporter of Palestine and actively campaigning against Israel since the outbreak of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
However, the European Broadcasters’ Union has strongly rejected the open letter, arguing that Israel has fulfilled all the requirements to participate in the contest. It has since been revealed that two Israeli artists will enter the competition.
The case has stirred quite a debate on social media. According to anti-Israel voices, there is no room for war and hatred at the festival, only peace. But this is „interesting” argument, considering that they are happy to spread hatred and ban artists in the name of peace. In this very controversial video below, a woman talks about how music is about love, and how Israel should therefore be banned.
