How The German State Funds Antifa

The paramilitary network’s close ties to the state are undeniable, as it often directly supports or reinforces government policy on the streets – for example, on issues of migration or against the opposition.

The German government generously rewards this commitment: this year, for instance, State Minister for Culture Wolfram Weimer awarded 50,000 euros in taxpayers’ money to Antifa’s Unrast publishing house as part of the German Publishing Prize. Unrast has already released a brochure containing detailed instructions on left-wing extremist terrorism, urban warfare and street fighting. During the protests in Giessen, Antifa nearly put these tips into practice verbatim, the Nius news portal points out.

Since 2019, the German government has also funded other Antifa publishers — Verbrecher Verlag and Edition Assemblage — with 101,000 euros in taxpayers’ money. Various Antifa collectives write for Verbrecher Verlag, and the publisher organises the far-left Berlin “Left-Wing Book Days”. The publisher of Edition Assemblage serves as the head of a group providing legal assistance to far-left offenders.

The books entitled Let’s Talk About Prison, Tips and Tricks for Antifa and Anti-Racists, and Abolishing Remembrance are published by Edition Assemblage, Unrast and Verbrecher Verlag, respectively.

Funding Antifa Festivals

In 2024, the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth — then led by Green Party politician Lisa Paus — financed an event called “Festival contre le racisme Bamberg” (Festival Against Racism Bamberg), organised by the Antifa group “KIBA Bamberg”. This organisation regularly hosts “Antifa Bars”. Over the years, the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs has financed the festival with at least 3,500 euros in taxpayers’ money.

Through the funding scheme “Democracy Lives!”, the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs — currently headed by CDU politician Karin Prien — also supports the radical left-wing Amadeu Antonio Foundation, founded by a former Stasi informant. The foundation not only employs individuals who work for antifascist publishing houses and newspapers, but also directly funds antifascist activities, such as the “Beherzt” (Courageous) network.

Using the same funding scheme, the ministry also supports left-wing “sister-city partnerships”. In 2023 and 2024, these municipalities organised “antifascist tours” with Bernd Langer — one of Antifa’s main ideologists.

In the 1970s, Mr. Langer and his group “Art and Struggle” designed the now-famous Antifa logo featuring the red-and-black flag, symbolising both socialism and anarchism. Mr. Langer is considered a leading figure in the movement and has attempted to make it socially acceptable. Next year, he will publish a book with Unrast Verlag titled Antifa USA: From Movement to ‘Terrorist Organisation’.
