Soros’s Globalists Are Worried
The United States, under President Donald Trump, is exporting its culture war to Europe, deliberately dragging the continent’s politics to the right, laments a new report by the European Council on Foreign Relations (ECFR) – a lobbying organisation founded and, in part, lavishly financed by George Soros’s Open Society Foundations.
According to the Berlin-based Soros NGO, what was once a shared Western identity has splintered. In its report, it writes that instead of cooperation, Europe is now responding to crises scripted by Washington – such as disputes over migration, climate policy, free speech and the so-called „wokeism.”
The recently published study, compiled by 27 researchers across the EU, argues that Trump’s “weaponisation” of issues such as migration, climate, wokeism and free speech is no accident.
It is part of a co-ordinated international movement “determined to overthrow Europe’s liberal democratic order”,
– it said, as highlighted by the Brussels Signal news site.
Soros’s Globalists Are Worried
The ECFR describes this as a battle on two fronts. First comes the ideological stage: open disputes about democracy, freedom and the rule of law. These, the report argues, are being reshaped by Trump and his allies to shift the political centre ground in Europe. The second front is identity.
By depicting Europeans as naïve, dependent, or strategically incompetent, Trump’s US undermines the continent’s dignity and autonomy,
– states the study, which is clearly seeking to pin the blame for Europe’s condition on Mr. Trump.
The authors of the study conclude with a dire warning, claiming that “unless Europe reclaims control over its values, politics and global role, it risks being reduced to little more than a stage for America’s ongoing culture war.”
Europe’s Troubles Were Caused by Brussels Leadership
Interestingly, the report does not address the role of European leadership – for instance of EU decision-makers such as European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen – in the radical decline of the EU’s political and economic weight in recent years.
Mario Draghi, former president of the European Central Bank, presented his report on the state of the European economy to the European Commission months ago. Yet he recently stated that he does not see the Commission under Ursula von der Leyen’s leadership, nor the EU as a whole, making progress on his recommendations. According to Mr. Draghi, the continent’s growth model has faltered, dependencies are increasing, and rivals are reacting more quickly to challenges. Unless the EU changes gear and carries out comprehensive reforms, it risks losing not only its competitiveness but also its political sovereignty. The former central bank chief argued that Europe’s growth model had previously been built on expanding world trade and high value-added exports, but the foundations of this model have now weakened. The United States has introduced historic tariff increases, while China has become a stronger competitor both in its domestic markets and in foreign trade.
“The EU is in a worse position than it was a year ago,”
– he warned.
However, it comes as little surprise that the ECFR is not just troubled by the issue of economic decline, but also the fact that conservative, patriotic voices – represented in the United States by Donald Trump – are gaining growing prominence in Europe. After all, in recent years the liberal mainstream has provided them with abundant support. For the ECFR is, in truth, a genuine hub for leftist-liberal pseudo-NGOs, lobbyists and politicians in Europe.
