Swedes brace for severe power cuts this winter
As the cold weather sets in this winter, the city of Gothenburg may face power outages. Apartment owners are at the highest risk, but industrial facilities could also be affected.
Local authorities are concerned that Gothenburg may not have sufficient electricity this winter, raising the prospect of blackouts. The supplier, Gothenburg Energi, has warned that the electricity grid will struggle to meet the increased demand until 2035, according to the Swedish Samnytt news portal.
Jonas Attenius, President of Gothenburg Municipality, has warned that individuals and households might be left without electricity.
„The biggest problem is the lack of electricity. We have now reached a stage where, if we experience a very cold winter with high pressure and high consumption, we will face a serious shortage,”
– he told Göteborgs-Posten.
He added that shortages already occur during peak times, and looking ahead, power cuts could extend beyond these peak periods.
Promted by the situation, the city council drew up a contingency plan two years ago to manage a potential power shortage, which involves distributing the existing supply.
In such a situation, hospitals will be prioritised for electricity, but „homeowners can expect to face more significant power cuts.”
