A 17-year-old girl was stabbed to death while calling police to report that she was being followed — with the arrest of an asylum seeker triggering furious protests across the Netherlands. In the aftermath, several women came forward saying the same man had harassed, assaulted, or attempted to rape them, fuelling a surge in anti-migrant sentiment nationwide.

The body of the victim, only identified by the first name Lisa, was found in a roadside ditch in Amsterdam last week, hours after she was attacked on her way home from a night out with friends.

The teen was heading home on an electric bike when she called police to report that someone was following her, De Telegraaf reported.

When her body was finally found, she had multiple stab wounds — including one to her neck, the outlet said, as cited by the The New York Post.

A 22-year-old male asylum seeker was arrested one day after the murder by a SWAT team at a migrant center in Amsterdam, De Telegraaf reported. Police say he is the prime suspect in Lisa’s murder case.

The migrant abused other women, too

The migrant man also raped and beat another woman in Amsterdam on 15 August.

He also allegedly assaulted a third woman five days earlier, with that victim coming forward after seeing appeals about Lisa’s murder, police said.

Another woman has alleged that she was chased by a man matching the suspect’s description on the same day Lisa was killed.

„Hazafelé tartottam a munkából, és amikor befordultam a sarkon, láttam egy normálisnak tűnő férfit, aki azonban utánam kezdett futni” – mondta a De Telegraafnak a névtelen nő, hozzátéve:

“I was on my way home from work and when I turned a corner, I saw a man who looked normal, but he started running after me,” the unidentified woman told De Telegraaf.

„“I thought he was going to hurt me or take my e-bike or phone. Luckily, he didn’t catch up, but I’m still shaking with fear,”

Huge protests under way

Lisa’s death has sparked furious protests in the Netherlands, with hundreds gathering in the city of Rotterdam on Sunday in a “March Against Femicide.” A minute’s silence for Lisa was held on Sunday before an Ajax soccer match at the Johan Crujff Arena, just yards from where her body was found.

Right-wing politicians – such as Geert Wilders of the nationalist Freedom Party – pledged to end all asylum claims in the wake of the murder. As is known, Mr. Wilders pulled his party out of a conservative coalition government at the beginning of June, following a dispute over asylum policy, triggering a snap election in The Netherlands.
