UN Women Promotes Left-Wing Ideologies in Its Campaigns

What originally began as an international women’s rights organisation is increasingly becoming a one-sided, left-leaning association. The neutrality of the UN’s women’s agency has been called into question, and some experts argue that it is using the protection of women’s rights to promote and legitimise its own aims and ideology.

In recent years, UN Women has repeatedly drawn attention with statements that have little or no connection to the fight for women’s rights. The headscarf and the climate have now become central elements of the organisation’s campaign strategy.

When Hamas carried out a massacre in Israel on 7 October 2023, it caused unimaginable suffering for women as well. The Islamists raped, abused, abducted and murdered hundreds of Israeli women — all before the eyes of the world. Many of the atrocities were filmed and published, making the public a direct witness. Yet despite the evidence contained in these horrific videos, for months, UN Women avoided clearly identifying or condemning what had happened for months.

Instead, it spoke only about women in Gaza and the dangers posed to them by the conflict in the Middle East. What was already seen as an inconceivable hypocrisy at the time has continued to shape the public communications of UN Women ever since.

Campaigns Beyond the Bounds of Good Taste

Under the motto “When Women Lead, Peace Follows”, UN Women aims to support women and secure them a greater role in decision-making in order to bring about change in the world — at least according to its campaign slogan. However, the content and images published by UN Women paint a very different picture.
For its “When Women Lead, Peace Follows” campaign, the UN Women published an image showing Sudanese women fully veiled. Women in Sudan suffer from severe oppression, facing not only physical violence, sexual assault and forced marriage, but also deep economic and social disadvantages. Sudanese women depend on their husbands for almost every decision and cannot lead independent lives. Moreover, by wearing the veil, they display one of the most visible signs of male oppression.

In another article, the organisation wrote: “Our differences make us unique.” The image showed several women, including one wearing a headscarf. The accompanying text called for the celebration of diversity, appreciation of other cultures and mutual respect.

However, in many Muslim societies the visible oppression of women, made obvious by the compulsory wearing of the veil, becomes, in the eyes of the UN agency, a symbol of freedom and a legitimate form of cultural expression. Many interpret this as hypocrisy.

Climate policy has also become an essential part of the organisation’s feminist agenda.

According to its own statements, UN Women follows an intersectional approach, which is why it deals with „all forms of discrimination, such as poverty, racism and sexism”. Climate apparently falls into this category as well. The organisation seeks to draw attention to the issue with slogans such as „Climate change is not gender-neutral” and “Climate crisis = women’s rights crisis”.

According to Exxpress, UN Women is a clear example of how left-wing feminists use women’s rights to advance their own ideological goals. It added that debates about women’s rights and safety are used to place certain groups above others, as in the case of Israeli women. Other political causes are also made more acceptable by framing them as women’s issues. Women are deliberately cast as victims when it suits certain interests. Meanwhile, women’s real suffering is concealed or ignored if it does not align with the organisation’s worldview, the outlet wrote.
