"Refugee Week" instead of Easter celebration
This year, an elementary school in England will not be celebrating Easter. The school administration justified the decision by stating that they "want to respect different religious beliefs" and "show respect for diversity." However, instead of Easter celebrations, they are introducing something called "Refugee Week."
The primary school in England sent a letter to parents and guardians informing them that there would be no traditional Easter parade or Easter Service this year. School Principal Stephanie Mander, who wrote the letter, explained that the school aims to conduct its activities „in the spirit of inclusion.”
The letter states: „By not holding specific religious celebrations, we aim to create a more inclusive environment that respects and acknowledges the faith of all our children and their families.”

The letter also informs parents that instead of Easter festivities, students will participate in inclusive, diversity-focused activities, including „Refugee Week.”
The school acknowledges that this decision may disappoint many students and parents, but insists on moving forward, emphasizing that „inclusive values and respect for diversity” are more important.
This measure is also part of the school’s efforts to obtain „Sanctuary School” accreditation. However, the decision has not been well received by everyone. It is not only Christian and Jewish students and parents who are upset—non-Christians have also criticized the change.
A Hindu former student wrote on X (formerly Twitter):
„No Easter celebration? What is this? Even though I’m Hindu, I loved Easter celebrations at school. They were amazing. Apparently, all-inclusive inclusivity is ruining everything.”
Another student wondered whether the school also plans to cancel Christmas celebrations, according to the Swedish news outlet Samnytt.
Critics now hope that the school will fail in its initiative and that parents will unite to ensure that their children can continue to celebrate Easter as they always have.
