Voter confidence in left-wing government plummets
Voter confidence in Giuseppe Conte s coalition government in Italy has fallen by 20 percentage points since mid-March, according to a study published on Wednesday by the Italian polling institute Tecne. If elections were held now, the centre-left ruling coalition would receive around 30 per cent of the votes, while Matteo Salvini s Lega alone enjoys a 25.6 per cent support.
If elections were held in Italy now, 53.1 per cent of voters would vote to replace the head of government, 33.3 per cent would propose a national unity government, and 19.8 per cent would want an early election, a recent survey by the pollster Tecne found.
In terms of popularity, Lega remains in first place among voters with a 25.6 per cent support, while the left-wing Democratic Party (PD) is second with 20.2 per cent. Lega s presumptive coalition partner, Brothers of Italy (FdI) led by Giorgia Meloni stands at 15.8 per cent, slightly higher than the Five Star Movement (M5S) at 14.8 per cent. Silvio Berlusconi s Forza Italia is stable at 8.2 per cent while Italia Viva, Matteo Renzi s movement is at 3.1 per cent.

Matteo Salvini s anti-immigration, centre-right Lega appears to have a stable voter support. In the last three years, Lega has grown from an insignificant party at 4 per cent into a political force enjoying a steady 25 per cent voter support thanks to Salvini s predictable policy.
„There is an impressive volatility and in the age of light parties, a small breeze is enough to make them fly high or make them fall ruinously to the ground,” said Carlo Buttaroni, president of Tecne. The senior analyst noted that one significant cause of voter dissatisfaction with the current government stems from very gloomy data on the economy, which is having „an increasingly harsh impact on people s daily lives.”
