In 2023, there were 27,470 violent crimes in German schools, a significant increase compared to the previous year, according to the German newspaper Die Welt. Citing federal state security authorities, the Neue Osnabrücker Zeitung highlighted that there were 21,570 violent crimes in 2022, including both minor and serious bodily injuries.
According to the report, the majority of violent crimes occurred in the most populous state, North Rhine-Westphalia, where authorities registered 4,808 incidents. In the previous year, state authorities recorded 2,972 violent crimes there. The state of Baden-Württemberg ranked second with almost 3,000 such crimes, compared to 2,456 the previous year. In Lower Saxony, the figure rose from 2,295 to 2,850, while in Berlin it increased from 2,325 to 2,721. Bavaria’s similar crime-related figures rose from 2,228 to 2,645 during the same period.
Stefan Düll, President of the German Teachers’ Association, has called for the deployment of specially trained security staff in schools.
