Berlin may declare an emergency due to migration crisis
The German capital is on the verge of collapsing under the financial strain caused by mass migration.
Despite claims that migrants are going to fund the entire West and save pensions with all the tax funds they generate, reality is once again encroaching. Now, the Berlin senate is preparing emergency loans to cover refugee costs at a time when Berlin is cutting services, including for schools, due to increasingly dire budget shortfalls, Remix News writes.
Notably, even though a Christian Democrat (CDU), Kai Wegner, is the mayor of Berlin, little has changed under his leadership compared to the previous left-wing government. Berlin’s CDU Finance Senator Stefan Evers is reportedly preparing to issue emergency loans to cover refugee-related costs. One major issue is that Berlin operates under a “debt brake” law, which prevents the city from taking on additional debt. However, the government claims there are legal provisions for making exceptions.
Earlier, Berlin indicated that housing migrants would cost 500 million euros in 2025, translating into 1.5 million euros per day. Large-scale renovations to convert buildings into refugee accommodations have already begun. For a single building, costs could amount to hundreds of millions of euros over the next decade.
Berlin already froze school budgets for 2024, but these austerity measures are insufficient. The 500 million euros figure does not include other expenses, such as education, integration efforts, or law enforcement.
In all likelihood, the solution will involve more debt and more spending, with Berlin ready to declare an emergency to make up for the shortfalls. At the federal level, the situation may be even worse: nearly 50 billion euros were spent on migrants in 2023. Across Germany and much of the Western world, migration is not only fueling the debt crisis but is also a key driver of skyrocketing property prices.
Migrants are consuming taxpayers’ money
According to statistics from the Federal Employment Agency (Bundesagentur für Arbeit), the allocation of German tax revenues does not align with the country’s demographic makeup. Reports indicate that one-third of those receiving citizen’s benefit (Burgergeld, basic income support for job seekers) are native German speakers, while the remaining two-thirds go to individuals from other linguistic and cultural backgrounds, as reported by Junge Freiheit.

The primary beneficiaries are Ukrainians, Syrians, and Afghans, who live off taxpayer money. Officials attribute this to the fact that these individuals often face greater difficulties in finding employment due to language barriers, lack of professional qualifications, and challenges with labor market integration. For many of them, Burgergeld serves as the primary source of financial support. Last year, Germany spent 42.6 billion euros on this program, with the figure continuing to rise. The increase has been linked to former Free Democratic Finance Minister Christian Lindner, and Social Democratic Labour Minister Hubertus Heil, who significantly expanded social benefits in recent years.
