The Satanic Temple has opened a second abortion clinic in the United States, claiming that their right to practice religious abortion stems from people's basic religious liberty.

The Satanic Temple has opened a scond abortion clinic in the U.S., this time in Virginia, where expectant mothers can engage in a so-called „self-focused” abortion ritual.

Their goal in turning abortion into a ritual is that they can make the claim that practicing abortion is a religious liberty issue that that the termination of pregnancy is a „spiritual” undertaking,

Abortion in Virginia is legal through the 27th week, or second trimester of pregnancy.

As part of the so-called „destruction ritual, the clinic will offer chemical abortions. The first ritual abortion clinic from the Satanic Temple was the Samuel Alito’s Mom’s clinic in New Mexico where, along with medical counsel, „free ceremonial support” is offered to everyone.

Those undergoing abortion and participating in the „ritual” are intended to „assert their right to bodily autonomy as a religious practice.”

The pregnancy terminations are done via telehealth, meaning that providers never come into contact with the women who seek abortion.

„The satanic abortion ritual is a „destruction ritual” that serves as a protective rite. Its purpose is to cast off notions of guilt, shame, and mental discomfort that a patient may be experiencing due to choosing to have a legal and medically safe abortion,”

Services offered by the Satanic Temple are free, exclusive of the abortion pills, which need to be obtained separately. „While many clinics have been forced to shut down, we took a bold step forward by opening the world’s first religious abortion clinic on February 14th, 2023. Since then, we have proudly offered over 100 abortions in New Mexico at no cost to patients aside from the medication,” the Temple attests.

Abortion pills are legal throughout all fifty states per a Supreme Court ruling that said that access to those pills would be preserved nationwide. Chemical abortions are not without risk. If the fetus is not fully expelled, a woman can develop severe complications including sepsis, leading to death. The Satanic Temple, established as a means of accessing funding that was intended for religious-based community groups, has offered a handbook on how to undertake a ritual abortion. However, it fails to mention any potential risks or medical complications that could lead to the death of the mother seeking pregnancy termination.
