More than half of Dutch voters (57 per cent) are satisfied with the package of measures announced by the government to reduce levels of immigration into the Netherlands.

Three-quarters of those supporting the coalition parties are satisfied with the plans, while only 43 per cent of Dutch residents believe that the government will succeed in actually implementing the measures, according to the RTL Nieuws survey.

The Dutch prime minister recently announced that the Netherlands would restore border controls, maximize the duration of refugee status at three years and send refugees back to areas in Syria declared safe.

„We’ll see what effects the package will have, so we can’t say exact figures at the moment. But there is no doubt that the package as a whole will have an impact on the number of people coming to the Netherlands and the number of people leaving,” said Dick Schoof, who also defended the repealing of the legislation obliging all municipalities to take in their fair share of refugees. He also said that if a new Foreign Ministry report on Syria re-classified as safe further regions of the country, refugee status could be withdrawn from those arriving from there.

RTL researcher Gijs Rademaker said

voters appreciate the cabinet’s decisive steps, many measures have broad support, but there are concerns about their feasibility.

For example, 89% of voters support a plan to declare asylum seekers convicted of a crime as „undesirable” and to subsequently deport them, but only 52% think this is legally feasible. 61 per cent think it is a good idea to lock up asylum seekers who have exhausted all legal means of redress while they await deportation, but only 35 per cent believe this will actually happen.
