The entire country was shaken by the violent death of Lola, a 12-year-old school girl who was abducted by a gang, tortured, sexually abused and strangled to death. Lola’s body was found recently in a travelling chest on the street.

The little girl’s disappearance was reported by her mother on Friday afternoon after she did not come home from school. The mother also published a photo of an unknown woman, with whom witnesses last saw Lola. The video was recorded by the camera at the entrance of the condominium where the family lives. The desperate mother pleaded on Facebook for anyone who saw her daughter to immediately notify the police or the parents.

Lola’s body was found shortly after her disappearance, and police detained four suspects – all Algerian nationals – in connection with the incident. The main suspect is the 24-year-old woman seen on the photo published by the mother. During her police interrogation, Dahbia B. admitted that she had lured the little girl into her sister’s apartment, which is in the same building where Lola and her family lived in the 19th district of Paris, an article by BFMTV reveals. According to her statement, she sexually and physically abused the little girl, and after noticing that Lola had died from strangulation, she hid the body in a chest. According to the autopsy, the cause of death was suffocation, the newspaper writes.

An eyewitness told the press that the prime suspect had dragged a chest containing the body down to the street, left it in front of a café and then walked away.

According to the 20 minutes news portal, the case containing the body was found by a homeless person on the street, some 200 meters from the girl’s home. The numbers 0 and 1 were drawn in red on both of the little girl’s legs, and the suspect had said confusing things about organ trafficking to a man with whom she had been conversing in a bar. It is not yet clear whether the victim and her killer had known each other prior to the incident, as the woman’s lawyer has not yet answered the questions posed by the news portal.

As the investigation is progressing, however, an increasing number of details are being revealed about the main suspect. At first, we only knew that the 24-year-old woman is an undocumented, homeless migrant. Le Figaro journalist Guillaume Poingt, however, revealed on Twitter that the young woman arrived in the country legally in 2016 as a student. This summer, however, authorities initiated an expulsion procedure against her, after an airport check by police had exposed some issues with her residence permit, namely that she was an illegal immigrant.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin kept silent on the case for a long while, saying he would not comment on an ongoing investigation. However, his statements were refuted by renowned French writer Laurent Obertone, who retweeted many of the interior minister’s posts devoted to topical issues.

Several right-wing politicians reacted to the incident. Damien Rieu, a member of the Reconquete party, founded and led by Eric Zemmour, even replaced his profile photo with a drawing depicting Lola. The politician wrote that he held the interior minister responsible for what happened, as he never deports illegal immigrants out of the country.

National Rally politician Jordan Bardella also blamed the French government, saying the perpetrator was an illegal immigrant from Algeria.

The fact that Lola’s female murderer turned out to be an illegal immigrant is a textbook case highlighting the dangers of unfettered immigration, Marine Le Pen wrote on Twitter. It’s time we initiated a dialogue regarding this issue, the most popular right-wing politician added.

Right-wing politician Eriz Zemmour took to Twitter to call the incident an outright anti-French murder.

After a long silence, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin also weighed in on the case. In an interview with RTL on Tuesday morning, he said far-right politicians would do better to think about the consequences of their statements, as the victim’s family members are faced with the image of their murdered daughter relayed by every media.

Lola’s family left the capital after the tragedy. They travelled to the father’s parents in Pas-de-Calais department, north of the country. They did not want to speak on camera, but they told the reporter that the hardest part was still ahead of them, because they had not yet seen the body of their deceased daughter.
