Last year, Berlin police reported over a hundred gang rapes or group sexual assault incidents, with many of the cases taking place in residential buildings.

According to statistics published by Berlin police, the number of alleged cases of gang rape has remained consistently high for years, the Spiegel writes.

In 2023, the police recorded 111 cases.

According to police statistics, which include all completed investigations, there have been 89-106 cases of „group sexual assault” annually since 2020. The statistics do not reveal how the courts have ruled in these cases or whether one or more perpetrators have been convicted.

The majority of the 111 presumed victims were between 14 and 15 years old. Ten were between 16 and 17 years old, and thirteen were between 18 and 20 years old.

Most of the incidents occurred in residential buildings, with 27 cases where the location was unknown and 16 cases in parks.

Among the 106 identified suspects, twenty-five were under 18 years old, and twenty-eight were between 18 and 24 years old. The proportion of suspects with foreign citizenship was 54%, compared to 65% the previous year and between 44% and 51% in previous years.

Last year, a total of 1151 cases of sexual assault, sexual coercion, and serious sexual assaults were registered in police statistics. Authorities believe that there is a significant number of unreported cases, because many of the victims simply won’t report the incidents due to feelings of shame or fear of the perpetrator.
