British PM popularity plummets

The fruit borne by Rishi Sunak's erratic and botched migration policy is bitter, at best.

A YouGov survey conducted earlier this week before the controversial vote on the so-called Rwanda bill found that popular support for Rishi Sunak has shrunk to a staggering 21 per cent, while an overwhelming 70 per cent have an unfavourable opinion of the British prime minister.

According to the poll, Sunak’s popularity has fallen to its lowest level since the globalist-backed ouster of short-term ex-PM Liz Truss.

One of Rishi Sunak’s first pledges upon being elected as prime minister was to stop the influx of migrants arriving by boat, but nearly a year after vocalising the promise, the government has still failed to implement its flagship plan, with zero illegal migrants being removed from the country to asylum processing centres in Rwanda. The scheme involved the UK categorizing Rwanda a safe country in which illegal migrants could wait out the assessment of their asylum applications, and in return the British support Rwanda with massive sums of money.

The programme, which has been held up in legal limbo before the Supreme Court rejected it last month over security concerns, faced its biggest political hurdle Tuesday night. The PM introduced a bill to strengthen the legal footing of officially declaring Rwanda a safe country.

However, the bill met with resistance on Tuesday night when dozens of MPs from Sunak’s own party abstained from the vote.

Their concerns centred on the legislation leaving too much room for legal challenges to migrant removals in both Britain and Europe, given that it does little to address the fact that the UK is still bound by the France-based European Court of Human Rights (ECHR). The court, which controversially blocked a migrant removal flight to Rwanda in the summer of 2022, is technically a separate institution from the EU and therefore Britain’s membership remains, despite Brexit. Sunak’s critics, such as ex-Home Secretary Suella Braverman and former Immigration Minister Robert Jenrick, have argued that the PM needs to lead the country out of ECHR to truly take back control of the country’s borders.

However, this has not happened, and the mismanaged migration policy steeped in chaos has left its mark on the prime minister’s level of support, even among conservatives. Meanwhile, Brexit leader Nigel Farage’s support has surged within the same circle on the back of his successful appearance on a popular reality TV show. According to the latest surveys, he is now 21 points ahead of Sunak among voters.
