Brussels risks playing a dangerous game
Brussels is pressing ahead with the removal of the principle of unanimity, said Harald Vilimsky, an MEP and head of the Austrian Freedom Party (FPO) delegation, reacting to events unfolding during the most recent EU summit.
The payment of aid to Ukraine has once again been brought to the forefront during the EU summit in Brussels. European leaders not only advocated for an additional €35 billion in aid but also pushed for the breach of the unanimity principle to ensure even more funds reach Ukraine.
“It is madness to authorise further billion-euro payments to Ukraine during a time of economic uncertainty and inflation in Europe. An even greater scandal, however, is the demand to abolish the principle of unanimity,”
– said Mr. Vilimsky, the head of the Austrian Freedom Party’s (FPO) delegation to the European Parliament, reacting to the outcome of the EU summit.
This repeatedly exposes the complacency of Brussels’ centralists, who seek to transfer more powers from member states to Brussels, Mr. Vilimsky said, criticising the attitude approach of European governments. He said he believes that the principle of unanimity is a fundamental aspect of EU treaties and should in no way be weakened or abolished.
In line with the EU treaties, the above principle applies to sensitive areas where the EU lacks clear competence. “If the principle of unanimity were to be abolished, it would open Pandora’s box, and it would no longer matter whether the EU has competence or not,” Mr. Vilimsky warned against the plan. “The EU has already caused enough chaos as it is. Austria should not transfer any more powers to Brussels. We must significantly regain national sovereignty and clearly reject the abolition of the principle of unanimity,” Mr. Vilimsky concluded.
