The Bulgarian Parliament has adopted an amendment to the law on pre-school and school education, banning the promotion of ideas and views on non-traditional sexual orientation.
The amendment was adopted by 135 MPs, with 57 voting in favour and 8 abstentions. The new legislation was spurred by the results of a school survey on the attitudes of students aged between 14 and 18 towards LGBT issues. The draft amendment was quickly adopted on Wednesday after being submitted to Parliament.

Under the new law, Bulgarian kindergartens and schools are completely banned from any manner of promoting ideas or views related to non-traditional sexual orientation or to defining gender identity other than by biological sex

It is worth noting that in 2023, the Bulgarian Supreme Court ruled that changing biological sex through legal proceedings is not lawful under the current legal framework. The court stressed at the time that gender is recognised at birth and defines a person until death.
