Employee forced to work while sick infects the elderly
An elderly care home that produced a mass outbreak of coronavirus infections under the capital s supervision has struggled with inhumane conditions for a long time. It has recently come to light that the disease was transmitted by an employee who was forced to work while sick.
The Hungarian Ripost news site has highlighted yet another scandal surrounding an elderly care home that turned into a hotspot of coronavirus infections in Budapest. According to nurses working there one of their colleagues continued working for quite some time even while she was having a fever and a bad cough, meaning she was obviously sick. As the care home was struggling with a severe shortage of workforce, she really had no choice.
As no one else was able to do her job, the mental health specialist kept coming to work for weeks and treated several elderly people, as part of her job. Her colleagues are convinced that she brought the virus into the home. „Regardless of any health issues, those who could walk kept coming to work because we all knew that we are gravely understaffed to be able to look after so many elderly, sick people,” a nurse working in one of the care homes said.
Had staff received the assistance they needed to tackle the epidemic, the virus wouldn t have wreaked such large havoc at the care home, said a former employee, who has since resigned. The retirement home had one nurse looking after 160 residents and it also tried to skimp on baths and showers, so it s no surprise that the novel coronavirus epidemic claimed 68 lives and led to over 400 registered cases of infection within the institution s walls.
