Former Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz launched a scathing attack on Germany’s now defunct federal government, which – a few days ago – became history.

„I have a clear opinion about Germany. Thank God that government collapsed,”

– Mr. Kurz told Krone in a recent interview. He added that the open-border policy had failed.

„I very much hope that Germany will finally reconsider its stance on migration; they haven’t learned anything from 2015 and 2016,”

– remarked the former successful politician, who also criticised Germany’s new self-determination law that came into effect on 1 November. „I am socially liberal, but if you can change your gender and first name every year, then where are we headed? I’d scarcely believe all this, if I didn’t know that this was the reality in Germany,” he emphasised.

According to Mr. Kurz, the biggest challenge facing Germany is its crumbling economy.

„Energy-intensive industries can no longer operate successfully in Germany, the automotive sector is suffering massively, and major companies like BASF, which are successful worldwide, are no longer profitable in Germany,”

Mr. Kurz underlined, adding that this situation has dire consequences for Austria, and also for the EU. “In this sense, it’s no wonder that this was the least popular government of all time,” concluded the former Chancellor, who now leads Dream Security, an AI and cybersecurity firm in Israel. In his view, a right-wing conservative government would have performed better.

Mr. Kurz also identified certain areas where he felt that the Social Democrat-Green-Liberal government had failed: „They allowed energy prices to soar, and then seemed surprised that life became more expensive for people. The economy is losing its competitiveness, and jobs are being cut. Secondly, the government pursued an open-border policy, which led to a rise in crime, and people’s sense of security gradually decreased. The socio-political aberrations have also produced some severe consequences,” he stated.
