Taxpayers are footing sky-high costs of illegal migrants' healthcare

Enormous amounts of money are being spent on the treatment of illegal migrants, who in many locations are being prioritized over taxpayers in receiving medical care.

Since US President Joe Biden took office at the beginning of 2020, the Democratic administration has allowed millions of illegal migrants to cross the country’s southern border. Huge sums of money are being spent on providing care for these illegal entrants, in many places they are receiving health care before the taxpayers themselves. They are taking up spaces in emergency rooms and intensive care units in hospitals and are racking up huge amounts of debt in the process, leaving taxpayers to foot the bill.

A report in November 2023 by the House Committee on Homeland Security revealed that a significant portion of the $451 billion estimated annual cost of the Biden administration’s immigration crisis is going to health care for illegal immigrants. While the vast majority of illegal immigrants are uninsured, they are free to accumulate debt through long hospital stays. Many also receive public assistance. All an illegal immigrant has to do to get taxpayer-funded insurance is cross the southern border into California,

according to an analysis published by the US news portal Breitbart. It is worth remembering that Gavin Newsom, the Democratic governor of California, recently introduced the first state program to provide free and subsidized health care to illegal immigrants under the so-called Medi-Cal system. California’s new program will cost taxpayers more than $4.8 billion, according to a budget burden analysis by the Federation for American Immigration Reform (FAIR), which cites California health and human services data.

„The entire health care system is just being bombarded by a steady stream of illegal immigrants. Our healthcare system is so overwhelmed, and then add on top of that tuberculosis, COVID-19, and other diseases from all over the world,”

Almost a million people have been caught so far

In the first five months of the current fiscal year alone, Border Patrol agents apprehended more than 902,000 migrants who entered the United States illegally. Last year, the number of illegal border crossings set a new record, exceeding 3.2 million, at least that’s the number of illegal migrants apprehended by Border Patrol agents. In Denver, Colorado, recent migrants left the local healthcare system to deal with more than $10 million in uncompensated costs in 2023. This enormous figure came from 8,000 illegal immigrants who made about 20,000 health visits in 2023.

Dr. Robert Trenschel, CEO of the Yuma Regional Medical Center situated on the Arizona–Mexico border, said on average, illegal immigrants cost up to three times more in human resources to resolve their cases and provide a safe discharge. He said many illegal immigrants needing medical assistance end up staying in the ICU ward for 60 days or more. A large portion of the patients are pregnant women who’ve had little to no prenatal treatment. This has resulted in an increase in newborns requiring intensive neonatal care for 30 days or longer,

The Epoch Times writes. Also worth noting is that in mid-January, Republican Representatives Richard Hudson and Brett Guthrie introduced the Protect Medicaid Act in order to “prevent federal taxpayer dollars from being used to administer or provide Medicaid benefits to illegal immigrants.” b

„We must stop rewarding those who break our laws at the expense of our most vulnerable citizens,”

Congressman Richard Hudson wrote on his X social media page.
