Tensions still high over migrant quotas
Poland's PM called for a joint meeting with opposition forces to discuss and reject the migration reforms of Brussels. Meanwhile, the European Commission is stepping up pressure on countries that resist Brussels' will.
„I believe that Poland unites us and that we can speak with one voice in Europe. The forced relocation mechanism poses a threat to Poland’s security,” Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki stated on Twitter in a post addressed primarily to the opposition forces. According to the premier, effective migration measures have so far protected Poles from situations such as those in, for example, France, where migrants have been rampaging through the streets for a week, alighting the capital and large cities in flames, or in Germany, where terrorists were caught the other day by police.
„That is why I invite all parliamentary parties to a discussion. Poland is our treasure that we must protect,”
Morawiecki wrote.

In the end, Poland’s left-wing parties did not take part in the consultation, at which the prime minister underlined that participants are not expected to give their reactions immediately, ensuring that the consultation will definitely have an afterlife.
Meanwhile, Brussels considered the recently held EU summit a great success and emphasized that only two countries, Poland and Hungary, opposed the proposed measures for the relocation of migrants. Non-compliant countries, including third countries, will be hit with financial sanctions, EU Commissioner Ylva Johansson announced this week at a press conference on the Italian island of Lampedusa. Hundreds of illegal migrants have been arriving here every day for many months.
Ylva Johansson, ignoring the fact that the migration package wasn’t, as yet, accepted at the EU summit, declared that solidarity is mandatory for all countries. In this regard, former Polish Prime Minister Beata Szydlo, who is now a member of the European Parliament for Law and Justice party (PiS), recalled that
„the conclusions on migration were not accepted, which means that the new regulation should not be implemented within the EU system. However, Brussels officials make up their own rules outside of the European treaties and expect all EU countries to comply with them.”

The ruling party politician also called on the opposition parties to negotiate. As she put it, „today the most important thing is to act together for the sake of Poland. We need unity against the migration pact that is dangerous for Poland”.

In Austria, the Austrian Freedom Party (FPO) called on the federal government to not only negotiate with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, but to also do as he does in terms of migration policy. Party chairman Herbert Kickl said that
„instead of following through on the big announcements with actions and supporting Hungary and Poland in their demands, and thereby putting more pressure on the EU, Chancellor Karl Nehammer and Interior Minister Gerhard Karner are once again sitting back”.
The heads of government of Hungary and Poland are demonstrating how to effectively protect the country and the population from the dangers caused by illegal migration, the leader of the FPO added, then stressed that the mandatory redistribution against the will of the states must be clearly rejected, otherwise Austria is committing suicide.
„An FPO federal chancellor would have supported Hungary and Poland in this fight for freedom against Brussels. I call on the chancellor to immediately withdraw Austria’s support for the forced distribution of refugees. If you don’t have the courage to defend the Austrians, then leave your seat and take Interior Minister Karner with you,”
Herbert Kickl said.
