Ukraine’s inability to demonstrate decisive success on the battlefield is stoking fears that the conflict is becoming a stalemate and international support could erode. Meanwhile, a war-weary Ukrainian public is eager for leaders in Kyiv to secure victory and in Washington, calls to cut back on aid to Ukraine are expected to be amplified in the run up to the 2024 US presidential race.
Three years to war with Russia?
NATO countries have three years to prepare for a confrontation with Russia, the head of Poland's National Security Bureau (BBN) says.
Jacek Siewiera, head of Poland’s National Security Bureau (BBN), has issued a warning that NATO countries in the East should brace for a potential confrontation with Russia within the next three years. He asserts that the threat is more significant than previously estimated.
In an interview with the Catholic newspaper Nasz Dziennik, Mr Siewiera mentions that the Germans had predicted a five-year timeline, but he considers this a very bold statement. He emphasizes the continuous efforts of the Russian defense industry, which operates around the clock and is capable of replenishing its arsenal in three years.
Mr Siewiera’s assessment aligns with analyses from the United States. The BBN chief has also addressed the relationship between the Polish president and the country’s new parliamentary majority, highlighting diverging views on various issues. Despite potential differences of opinion, he underlined that the fundamental directions of national security, including army build-up, troop reinforcement and modernization, are expected to be respected.
The question here is which of the two sides is going to be worn out sooner,
– said Franz-Stefan Gady, a senior fellow with the International Institute for Strategic Studies and the Center for a New American Security, who visited Ukraine in July.
Ukraine, however, is in a more difficult situation, and the window of time to conduct offensive operations is limited, the expert said. Last year, Ukrainian forces made little progress after recapturing the southern city of Kherson in early November, as inhospitable weather set in. With its ground forces advancing slowly, Ukraine is using drone strikes to expand its military’s reach as it waits for more advanced munitions and training. However, but these drone strikes are causing minimal damage, they are essentially just a means of procrastination.
