Crime rates have reached unprecedented levels in Spain

According to newly released data from Eurostat, the number of reported sexual crimes in the European Union has seen a dramatic increase. In Spain, this surge far exceeds the continental average.

The Spanish media outlet La Razon reports that Spain has experienced one of the most significant changes, with the country registering 5,222 offenses in 2024, compared to just 1,239 in 2014. This marks a staggering 322 percent increase, well above the EU average of 150 percent.

Eurostat does not provide data on who commits these crimes. However, other sources have examined this issue. As reported by Remix News last year, the CEU-CEFAS Demographic Observatory’s report titled „The Demographics of Crime in Spain” revealed that foreigners, who make up 31 percent of the prison population, commit 500 percent more sexual assaults and 414 percent more murders per capita than Spanish citizens.

The highest rates are observed among Arabs and Latinos

While the number of murders in Spain remains stable at around 300 annually, the number of attempted murders has skyrocketed. In just four years, from 2019 to 2023, attempted murders nearly doubled, rising from 836 to 1,507.

In the same five-year span, cases of rape involving penetration have also increased by 143 percent, from 2,143 in 2019 to 5,206 in 2024.

As previously reported by Remix News, numerous Spanish regions show a significant overrepresentation of foreigners in serious crimes, such as sexual harassment, including in the Basque region. Foreigners are 440 percent more likely to commit violent robbery. Many of these cases have made headlines in the Spanish media.

The study’s authors noted that Spain’s aging population would have led to a decrease in crime rates, but the influx of migrants, which amounts to 3.8 million every decade, has resulted in the problem of „imported crime.”

Mohamed Tops Baby Name List in Andalusia as Immigration Transforms Spanish Region

In Andalusia, Spain’s most populous region, Mohamed has become the most common name given to newborn boys, surpassing Manuel, which had led the regional lists every year since 2016. Andalusia is the latest European region to reach this milestone, already noted in England and Wales, Belgium, and parts of Germany and France.

The data illustrates how rapidly the demographic composition of Andalusia has changed. In Almería province, the name Mohamed was already the third most popular male name in 2023, tied with Antonio, with both names registering 51 babies according to data from the Andalusian Secretariat. Only Hugo and Alejandro ranked higher. By 2025, this trend is expected to extend across the entire region.

Traditional Andalusian names—María for girls and Manuel for boys—had dominated the official rankings for years.

The fact that Mohamed has now replaced Manuel at the top of the boys’ list is not merely a shift in naming trends. It reflects a demographic transformation largely driven by immigration from predominantly Muslim countries, primarily Morocco, and neither the Spanish state nor the EU has made serious attempts to slow this trend, as highlighted by the Brussels Signal news portal.
