UN Women Faces Backlash Over New Campaign

UN Women aimed to set an example with its campaign on women's self-determination but has instead found itself under fire for its messaging.

With the slogan „When women lead, peace follows,” UN Women seeks to strengthen the role of women in peace processes worldwide. However, recent data and a controversial Instagram post have raised questions about whether the organization’s image aligns with its mission.

„Don’t dictate to women and girls how to dress, behave, and live” is the clear message of UN Women’s latest campaign, currently promoted on social media. Yet, the campaign image has sparked significant outrage, particularly because it features a woman wearing a headscarf. For many observers, this detail stands in direct contradiction to the self-determination being advocated.

The central message of the campaign is unequivocal: women should have the freedom to decide how they live. However, the image also showcases a symbol that, in many countries, represents not freedom but social pressure, religious mandates, and male control.

The headscarf is not merely a neutral garment; in many parts of the world, it signifies political Islam and societal structures where women cannot make free choices. This is precisely the crux of the criticism: while UN Women claims to advocate against rules and coercion, it depicts a symbol that embodies these very constraints.

Not the First Controversy

This is not the first time UN Women has stirred controversy with its campaigns. Back in October 2025, a post featuring Sudanese women also sparked outrage. Critics argued that the image conveyed oppression rather than strength or self-determination, portraying women who cannot assert themselves, receive lower wages, and are excluded from leadership roles. Additionally, it was noted that the actual leader of the group was cropped out of the image, a detail that intensified the backlash.

The recurring debates highlight a fundamental issue: the widening gap between demands and representation. UN Women champions women’s rights, political participation, economic independence, and self-determination globally. However, the visual language of its campaigns increasingly conveys a different narrative—one that does not resolve contradictions but rather makes them more visible, as pointed out by Exxpress.
