Isn't Brussels on edge over Polish rule of law?

"What we have seen in the last few days is a flagrant violation of the Polish constitution and Polish laws, a brutal and violent crackdown," said Polish President Andrzej Duda, describing the actions of Donald Tusk's new Polish regime and its erosion of the rule of law. V4NA has contacted the presidents of the European Commission and the European Parliament and EU Commissioner Vera Jourova to seek their comments on the events unfolding in Poland.

As is known, former Interior Minister Mariusz Kaminski and former Deputy Interior Minister Maciej Wasik, members of the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, sentenced to jail but granted presidential pardons, were arrested at the Polish presidential palace on Tuesday evening.

The arrest of the politicians has sparked a huge outcry in Poland, with politicians and many Poles

speaking of the repeated violations of the rule of law, which have become a regular occurrence in the country in recent weeks since Donald Tusk took power.

In an appeal on Wednesday, President Andrzej Duda said:

„I know that after what we have seen in the last few days, after the flagrant violation of the Polish constitution and Polish laws, after the brutal and violent actions, there is a lot of outrage, even anger. I call for calm. In Poland, it is free to assemble, to participate in demonstrations. But I strongly urge that these demonstrations be peaceful, dignified and calm.”

In recent weeks, the dismissal of the heads of Polish public television and radio, and the state news agency, as well as the threats and attempts to remove judges, have all been measures that have rightly provoked the anger of Poles concerned about the rule of law and freedom of speech and expression. It is clear that

Donald Tusk and his circles have embarked on a brutal, politically-motivated purge as soon as they came to power.

V4NA has contacted in a letter the Presidents of the European Parliament and the European Commission, as well as Commissioner for Values and Transparency Vera Jourova, who have frequently voiced their concern over the rule of law in Poland and whose powerful intervention has led to the withholding of EU funds from Poland while the right-wing government was in power.

We inquired what steps they are planning to take in response to the blatant violation of the rule of law in Poland in order to protect it,along with core European values, such as the freedom of speech and expression.
