German government coalition criticised over abortion issue

The federal president of the Christian Democrats for Life (CDL) expressed mixed feelings about the coalition agreement between Germany’s CDU/CSU and the SPD when it comes to the right to life.

The CDL has explicitly welcomed the long-overdue implementation of legislation aimed at suicide prevention. Measures intended to strengthen families—such as the improvement of parental benefits and plans to expand early support services beginning in pregnancy—are also to be applauded. One of the new coalition’s stated goals is to provide comprehensive support for women who have become pregnant unintentionally, “to ensure the best possible protection for the unborn child.” At first, this sounds positive, but the subsequent proposals aimed at improving access to abortion undermine this very goal.

Behind the declaration of intent – “to ensure that women in conflict situations have access to medically safe care close to home” – lies the pro-abortion camp’s argument that there are not enough abortion clinics.

However, an expert appointed by the CDU/CSU parliamentary group refuted the claim of an undersupply of abortion facilities during a hearing of the Bundestag’s Legal Affairs Committee on 10 February 2024. The hearing was prompted by a group proposal from the SPD and the Greens.

Nonetheless, the coalition’s proposal states that there are insufficient opportunities for carrying out terminations of pregnancy.

In 2023, more than 106,218 abortions were performed in Germany across 1,104 abortion facilities. In contrast, there were just 606 maternity units available for the 692,989 births recorded in the same year.

This comparison clearly demonstrates that priorities have dangerously shifted,

In the past, the CDL has repeatedly condemned this imbalance. According to the organisation, it is therefore encouraging that the new German government coalition now wants to ensure nationwide access to basic medical care, particularly in the fields of gynaecology and obstetrics.

However, the coalition’s intention to expand mandatory health insurance coverage for abortions “beyond current regulations” and to “strengthen” medical training in this area is incomprehensible. This amounts to the promotion of abortion and has nothing to do with ensuring the “best possible” protection for children in the womb.

Abortion numbers up drastically

In a piece poblished in 2023, V4NA emphasized that abortion is becoming increasingly fashionable, as the liberal mainstream seeks to downplay and trivialise the issue.

In 2022, nearly ten percent more abortions were performed in Germany than in the previous year.

At the time, Germany’s Federal Statistical Office recorded around 104,000 reported cases—an increase of 9.9 percent. The data showed that the number of abortions thus exceeded the levels recorded between 2014 and 2020, when the number of reported cases consistently ranged between 99,000 and 101,000.
