European Commission admits mistake

Tens of thousands of signatures may have been lost during a European Citizens Initiative (ECI) because of the European Commission s IT staff.

IT at the European Commission said it was the insufficient server capacity that s led to the shutdown of the ECI s signature collection page for the protection of indigenous national regions. According to IT figures, tens of thousands have failed to sign the initiative due to a server downtime on Wednesday alone, which is a huge number given that European Citizens Initiatives require 1 million signatures from at least 7 EU member states, in order for the topics to make it to the European Parliament s agenda.

V4NA asked the Brussels apparatus about this concrete case. We wanted to know who is responsible for the possible failure of a citizens initiative due to a mistake like this? We inquired whether there was wilful intent in the background or whether the staff in charge of running the website was simply so unprepared. We also asked the Commission if they have any knowledge of similar obstacles during other citizens initiatives.

Although we did not receive answers to our specific questions, the Commission acknowledged that there was a technical error during the collection of signatures. It is still unclear how many signatures have been lost during the shutdown, and whether trite mistakes such as this can also put other initiatives at risk.
