Talking to Hungary s public broadcaster, the prime minister s office chief justified the recommendation by saying that Hungary needs to raise its defence mechanism to a new level.

Gergely Gulyas said the government would also have to decide on a proposal to close the borders for those arriving from Italy. Hungarian citizens could still enter the country, but they would be automatically quarantined, he added.

The Operative Board also recommends that the government prohibits indoor events attended by more than one hundred people. Among other things, the state of emergency allows the government to order home quarantines, the minister added.

Mr Gulyas said the government would discuss the recommendations of the Operative Board regarding the epidemic at its meeting at 9 am on Wednesday.
