Soros-funded NGO outraged at Alexei Navalny

In January, the American George Soros-funded Amnesty International human rights organisation considered Alexei Navalny, then incarcerated in Russia, a "prisoner of conscience." Since then, however, the advocacy group s attitude toward the politician has flipped, as evidenced by a recently released email.

In early February, due to the systematic violation of his probation terms, a Moscow court decided to convert the opposition politician s three-and-a-half-year suspended prison term imposed earlier in the so-called Yves Rocher case, to mandatory time behind bars.

Amnesty International (AI), funded by the US stock market speculator, advocated for Mr Navalny back in January. They issued a statement, in which they described the politician as a „prisoner of conscience.” In their view, Mr Navalny s arrest was further evidence that Russian authorities wanted to silence him.

The organisation s attitude toward Mr Navalny, however, has suddenly changed.

In an email that came to light recently, they wrote that Mr Navalny is no longer considered a „prisoner of conscience” because earlier he had „advocated violence and discrimination” and had never withdrawn his controversial comments.

Nevertheless, AI will continue its calls for the politician s release from custody in the future.

Amnesty decided to revoke Mr Navalny s „prisoner of conscience” status after it resurfaced that Mr Navalny had made xenophobic remarks in the 2000s, when he was affiliated with Russia s far right. In one instance he compared Caucasian Muslims and immigrants to cockroaches.

The Open Society Foundations (OSF) are keen to support Amnesty with hefty sums of money. OSF s website reveals  that the organisation received 1.4 million dollars in 2019.

Mr Navalny s custody prompted several demonstrations in Russia. At one of these rallies, Russian authorities arrested a woman, a former student of George Soros s Central European University (CEU). CEU issued a statement, stating its support for Ann Vellikok.

Soros has been sponsoring his CEU with billions of dollars over the years. According to OSF s website, the institution received three very large amounts „to provide general support” in 2019 alone:

  • 632.5 million dollars (for 12 months),
  • 11.7 million dollars (for 19 months),
  • 175.9 million dollars (for 77 months).
