The latest developments between Russia and Ukraine are a major step towards urgently needed and long-overdue negotiations, said Harald Vilimsky, leader of the Austrian Freedom Party (FPO) delegation to the European Parliament.

„The fact that direct negotiations are finally taking place is a historic opportunity for Europe and the world. From the outset, US President Donald Trump has not been swayed by sceptics and has shown great diplomatic skill in bringing both sides to the negotiating table. His commitment to negotiations and his determination to find a peaceful solution deserve the highest respect,”

the politician stated, stressing that this makes the EU leadership’s almost dismissive reaction to this development even more incomprehensible. „Instead of welcoming this peace process, the EU leadership reacts with resentment and defiance – almost as if they were angry for not being the ones at the negotiation table. It doesn’t matter who mediates, the main thing is to stop the bloodshed, said Vilimsky, adding that the EU itself had every opportunity to ensure de-escalation at any time but chose a different strategy instead.

„It is now about making peace possible. Everything else must be pushed aside. Unlike the EU, Trump has succeeded in holding constructive negotiations with both sides – and we should thank him for that, instead of grumbling out of wounded pride. Anyone who genuinely wants peace should support this process, rather than torpedo it for ideological reasons,”

Vilimsky concluded.
